Inspections of private homes to commence

The Ontario government will begin entering homes looking for evidence of laws being broken.

In order to ease the people of this province into this new reality, the process will be done in phases.

First, only elderly gun owners will be expected to submit to a search.

After that? Who knows? Once we've established that public safety trumps individual rights, it won't be too hard to extend this principle to anything that the government deems dangerous or risky. Or for that matter, to anything that runs counter to the public interest.

As a police spokesperson said, any steps should be welcome by the public.

And here I was only welcoming constitutionally legal steps.

No wonder President Bush likes the Canadians, seriously though we've got governments gone wild, mad totally off the deep end, legions beyond common sense, rather frightening. Great seed here by the way, it's much better if you want others to find it, to always give a first vote for the system tracker to find it.

Many even leave a first comment so it appears where someone will hopefully see it go by and add their votes and comments and by jove, you're interactive before you know it. Great finds should be seen, eh?

I like to refer to it as world-changing evil.

I have noticed frequently that when such issues are aired on newsvine, someone will inevitably comment that 'slippery slope' arguments are invalid. This is one of those arguments. Government seldom implements wholesale violation of citizen rights. It almost always starts small and grows.

And yes, it is definitely government gone wild.

governments gone wild

Except instead of flashing lady-parts, they unlawfully invade other countries and inflame centuries old conflicts. Good times. :)

It makes me sad that some people would be ok with this. Even here in the US.

Yes. Even in the U.S., many people are OK with a myriad of government intrusions and violations of rights. The faulty 'Why should I care, I'm not doing anything wrong' argument is rampant among seemingly otherwise intelligent citizenry.

@Angry
You appear to be linking to your own blog here, which is a Newsvine no-no.

Anyone who wants a slightly less emotional version of this story can look to the National Post, which seems to be the only other source of what seems to be non-news story.

"This is a very real public safety concern," Ontario's Chief Firearms Officer Chris Wyatt wrote in a letter to the Canadian Shooting Sports Association (CSSA), which is against the idea.

The Chief Firearms Office says it is exercising its right, under the Firearms Act, to inspect homes where there are more than 10 firearms, including a restricted or prohibited gun.

It is targeting owners who are 75 years or older. The office has sent letters to 48 owners in Toronto advising them of the upcoming inspections, which will be prearranged.

The CSSA says the clause in the Firearms Act that permits inspectors to go into homes is unconstitutional.

It's not unconstitional in this country. The right to bear arms is not guaranteed in any way under the Canadian constitution - it is a priviledge. Gun ownership in Canada is subject to controls and restrictions because most Canadians prefer gun control.
